Status: Independent Contractor
Location: Multiple park locations within city of Spring Lake Park, MN
Reporting Relationship: Reports to Softball League Coordinator.
Salary:
Youth Head Umpire
$300 per league (minimum of 3 leagues)

Adult Field Supervisor
$500 for Summer League
$400 for Fall League

Umpiring
Youth: $19.50/game Adult: $25/game

Essential Functions and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Youth Head Umpire

  • Assign umpires for all Youth regular season and tournament games for all leagues (including substitutions). 
  • Work with the Recreation Supervisor to hold training and clinics as needed for the umpires
  • Head Umpire must maintain a nationally recognized softball association certification (i.e. USSSA).
  • Clearly inform all umpires of job duties and league rules so they are effective officials.
  • Review Youth league rules, make adjustments and suggestions when deemed necessary.
  • Enforce Youth league rules.
  • When necessary, notify coaches of weather cancelations.
  • Attend Youth league preseason coaches meeting.
  • Maintain regular communication with the League Coordinator and must be available to answer questions pertaining to league rules from coaches or players. Communicate any problems that come up. Communicate any suggestions to make the league better.
  • Be present at Youth league games and end-of-season tournament weekend to oversee implementation of league rules.
  • Other duties that may arise.

Adult Field Supervisor

  • Assist umpires with understanding and enforcing their job duties and Adult league rules.
  • Maintain regular communication with the League Coordinator and must be available to answer questions pertaining to league rules from coaches or players. Communicate any problems that come up. Communicate any suggestions to make the league better.
  • Reviews fields prior to play and makes necessary preparations for league play, including installing bases.
  • Promptly completes reports and communications essential to the administration of park activities.
  • Reports maintenance concerns when necessary.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive working relationships with program participants and the general public.
  • Ensure safety precautions are taken in all activities, and follow proper emergency procedures when needed.
  • Be present at Adult league games and end-of-season tournaments to assist implementation of league rules.
  • Other duties that may arise.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Work is performed in a recreation setting. Must be able to walk, stand, run, hear, and speak in order to perform essential duties as an umpire.
  • Ability to supervise others.
  • Ability to communicate, be courteous and cooperate with other staff members, players, managers, and spectators.
  • Previous knowledge or experience in umpiring or playing baseball or softball.
  • Ability to maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Able to follow oral and written communications.
  • Knowledge of sporting facilities specifications and how to perform routine maintenance tasks and facility repair.
  • Capable of operating necessary hand tools such as rakes, shovels, brooms, and chalker.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current certification by a nationally recognized softball association (i.e. USSSA).
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
  • Knowledge of athletic facility maintenance requirements, procedures, and equipment.
  • Experience participating and/or supervising recreational sports programs.

Important Program Dates

Youth League - Summer

  • Preseason Training Clinic: late April/early May
  • Regular Season Dates: May 15 – July 17 (no games May 27, June 6, & June 30 - July 3)
  • Tournament Dates: Thur, July 24 - Sat, July 26 (Sun, July 27 weather backup if needed)

Adult League - Summer

  • Regular Season: May 11 - July 27 (no games May 25 & July 6)
  • Tournament: Fri, Aug 1 & Sat, Aug 2

Adult League - Fall

  • Regular Season: Aug 10 - Sept 28 (no games Aug 31)
  • Tournament: Fri, Oct 3 & Sat, Oct 4
