Head Softball Umpire - Youth League

Salary: $1,500 for the season

We are seeking enthusiastic individuals who will provide leadership and supervise the umpires and keep control of the game(s) for the entirety of the Youth Summer Softball Season.
Work hours will be Monday - Thursday evenings (approx. 5:30-8:00pm), as well as tournament weekends (see dates below under Important Program Dates).
Job Summary
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Recruit qualified umpires for all Youth leagues, as needed.
- Assign umpires for all Youth regular season and tournament games for all leagues (including substitutions).
- Work with the Recreation Supervisor to hold training and clinics as needed for the umpires
- Head Umpire must maintain a nationally recognized softball association certification (i.e. USSSA).
- Clearly inform all umpires of job duties and league rules so they are effective officials.
- Review Youth league rules, make adjustments and suggestions when deemed necessary.
- Enforce Youth league rules.
- When necessary, notify coaches of weather cancellations.
- Attend Youth league preseason meeting at Spring Lake Park City Hall.
- Maintain regular communication with the League Coordinator and must be available to answer questions pertaining to league rules from coaches or players. Communicate any problems that come up. Communicate any suggestions to make the league better.
- Maintain a presence at the Youth league games and end-of-season tournament weekend to oversee implementation of league rules.
- Other duties that may arise.

Under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director and Softball League Coordinator, the Head Umpire position will enhance the quality of life for league participants and foster positive relationships with the community.
Qualifications
What is needed to apply for this job?
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Work is performed in a recreation setting. Must be able to walk, stand, run, hear, and speak in order to perform essential duties as an umpire.
- Ability to supervise others.
- Ability to communicate, be courteous and cooperate with other staff members, players, managers, and spectators.
- Previous knowledge or experience in umpiring or playing baseball or softball.
You may be a great fit if you:

- Participated in activities, sports, clubs, or other groups.
- Have the ability to display courtesy, patience, and friendliness.
- Current certification by a nationally recognized softball association (i.e. USSSA).
- Have CPR/First Aid training.
- Have 3-4 seasons of prior softball/baseball experience.
Important Program Dates
- Preseason Training Clinic: TBD
- Regular Season Dates: May 20 – July 18 (no games May 27, June 6, & July 1 - 4)
- Tournament Dates: Thursday, July 25 - Saturday, July 27 (Sunday, July 28 weather backup if needed)
